Logic Model / Impact Framework

AIA's results-chain logic model (Inputs → Activities → Outputs → Outcomes → Impact), explicitly defined and adaptable to each engagement's requirements, used to structure planning, monitoring and evaluation across both public and development-sector work.

What it is

A standard results-chain logic model defining Inputs (resources used), Activities (actions taken), Outputs (products/services delivered), Outcomes (short/medium-term effects) and Impact (long-term development effect), with a companion Impact Statement that anchors the model to an institution's vision, mission and legislative mandate.

Problem it solves

Provides a common language to connect what an organisation spends and does to what it actually achieves, avoiding plans that describe activity without demonstrating results.

When to use

  • Any engagement requiring a monitoring & evaluation framework
  • Public sector and development-sector strategic planning (paired with the Outcomes-Based Approach to Public Sector Strategy)
  • Impact reporting for donor-funded or development programmes

Key questions

  • What do we use to do what we do? (Inputs)
  • What do we do? (Activities)
  • What do we produce or deliver? (Outputs)
  • What do we wish to achieve? (Outcomes)
  • What do we aim to change? (Impact)

Inputs

  • Institutional mandate, vision and mission
  • Legislative/policy mandate
  • Case/programme data for illustrative logic chains

Steps

  1. 1Define the Impact StatementSet a clear long-term objective aligned to vision, mission and legislative/policy mandate.
  2. 2Map InputsIdentify financial, human and material resources used.
  3. 3Map ActivitiesIdentify actions taken to mobilise inputs into outputs.
  4. 4Map OutputsIdentify the products, capital goods and services delivered.
  5. 5Map OutcomesIdentify the likely or achieved short/medium-term effects of outputs.
  6. 6Map ImpactIdentify the long-term, intended or unintended effects of the intervention.
