AIA Performance Management Framework
AIA's five-part performance management framework — goal setting, monitoring, evaluation, capacity development and reward — used to cascade strategic KPIs into SMART, scorecard-based targets.
What it is
A performance management framework with five components — Performance Goal Setting (KPAs, KPIs, targets, competencies), Monitoring Performance, Evaluating Performance (scorecards, critical incidents), Developing the Capacity to Perform, and Rewarding High Performance — used to cascade strategic goals into SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) targets structured into scorecards.
Problem it solves
Performance management often fails when KPIs are disconnected from strategy or targets are not genuinely SMART; this framework forces an explicit cascade from strategy to scorecard.
When to use
- A client needs to design or refresh an organisational or executive performance management system
Key questions
- What key performance areas, indicators, targets and competencies should be set?
- How will performance be monitored, with regular and timely feedback?
- How will performance be evaluated objectively (scorecards, critical incidents)?
- How will the capacity to perform be developed?
- How will high performance be rewarded and recognised?
Inputs
- Approved organisational strategy and objectives
- Existing KPI/scorecard structures (if any)
Steps
- 1Performance goal settingIdentify KPAs, KPIs, targets and competencies aligned to strategic objectives.
- 2Monitoring performanceEstablish monitoring systems providing regular, timely feedback.
- 3Evaluating performanceObjectively evaluate performance using scorecards and critical incidents.
- 4Developing capacity to performProvide learning and development interventions to enhance performance.
- 5Rewarding high performanceEstablish reward and recognition initiatives that promote positive behaviours and results.
